  1. Rod Stewart Smiler ( - Mercury) This is a very good album by Rod and his friends from Faces and others. All the songs are done with great enthusiasm and the addition of a John/Taupin song ("Let me be your car", with Elton on piano and background vocals) along with a Paul McCartney song ("Mine for me", with Paul's un-credited slight background vocals) makes this a special album/5().

  6. Rod Stewart's classic formula ran out of gas on Smiler, his fifth solo failure of Smiler wasn't a matter of weak songs, nor was it a matter of Stewart being in poor voice. Instead, the album failed because everything, from the choice of songs to the production, sounded too pat and predictable.
